Learning fine motor skills through cooking

By: Debbie Madson

Cooking is a perfect activity to help learn fine motor skills for kids. Skills such as chopping, whisking, kneading, pouring, holding spoons, mixing, cutting and rolling can help develop these skills. It gives them a chance to have fun creating and cooking with an adult while learning at the same time.

For preschoolers letting them help whisk, stirring, or mixing alongside an adult is a great way for them to take part in helping prepare a recipe. Some kids are too young to do much on their own so helping stir is always a perfect way to get them involved.

A great recipe to get your preschooler or grade school child involved in cooking that includes these skills is making biscuits. Choose any biscuit recipe and allow them to stir and mix the ingredients. Adding pre-measured ingredients is also a good task for them or if they are older they can measure themselves. You can have them stir in ˝ cup of shredded cheese and ˝ cup of chopped ham to your biscuit recipe for more nutrition.

For older kids over 9-10 years old cutting and chopping can be a fine motor skill they can develop through cooking. Always show them the correct procedure and if you are not sure yourself call on someone who knows or research yourself before allowing your kids to handle sharp knives. Always double check your kid chef is focusing on their cutting and going slowly. They will become more proficient as they get older but the important thing to teach them is to always be aware. Trying a recipe such as a fruit salad, a green salad, or slicing ham for a casserole are all great ways for them to work on this fine motor skill.

The great thing about cooking with kids is they are learning skills and lessons they aren't even aware of because they have so much fun while cooking.
