Sheds Can Help With Spring Cleaning

By: Kathy Moran

By the time March arrives, most of us are ready to shed our warm woolen mittens, along with the snowflakes that stay on our noses and eyelashes, as they are no longer among our favorite things. Now, we’re just waiting for that silver-white winter to melt into spring. During this time, we perform one of our most celebrated rituals, known as spring cleaning. This custom is meant not only to rid our homes of the dirt and dust that have built up since last fall, but to exorcise the odor demons that have been such obnoxious – and just plain noxious – houseguests over the winter. Although the season’s grand opening of the windows goes a long way toward assisting with the eviction of many of the offending odors, there are always squatters that are reluctant to give up our hospitality. For these, we may need the extra muscle of some additional stench bouncers. Solid room deodorizers are good for this. Even though, standing alone, they are only fair combatants, when several of them join forces they are formidable odor foes; but the trick is to put them into secret service. All you have to do is to place several of them just inside the return air duct in your largest room, and the furnace fan will pull their collective fragrance into the central duct, and circulate it throughout your home. Another way to diffuse pleasant aromas quickly is to spray light bulbs with your favorite cologne or perfume, and let the heat from the bulbs release the scents. If you’re overwhelmed by the smell of mothballs when cleaning out a closet, try airing it out for a few days. If the odor still lingers, you can get rid of it by washing the walls with a blend of equal parts lemon juice (or white vinegar) and rubbing alcohol. If a cedar closet seems to be losing its aroma, you can restore it by sanding the walls lightly with superfine paper. Kitchens and bathrooms harbor more odors than any other rooms in the house; and they’re also some of the most difficult to eliminate. Clean these rooms with bleach, and then, to keep out moisture that promotes the growth of bacteria, mildew, and mold, re-seal all cracks around sinks, counters, tubs, and floors with fresh caulking, and re-grout tiles. To keep your shower curtain from being overcome by these growths, rinse it thoroughly after every shower and keep it closed so that mold and mildew cannot grow in its creases. These are just a few of the ways in which you can spring into the new season with a house that’s odor-free. On the other hand, to get rid of clutter, the one method that beats them all is to get a backyard shed from GazeboCreations.com. At GazeboCreations.com, you can get a pre-designed cedar, pine, or vinyl storage shed, or customize one in a few easy steps. You can select a box or barn style shed, choosing from tons of options, including gabled roofs, cupolas, skylights, shelves, ceiling fans, sliding windows, window boxes, extra doors, screens, and several colors of siding, trim, shutters, and shingles.
