So You Want It, But How Do You Know Whether You'll Get It?

By: James Delrojo

Have you heard the expression "the first 80% of GETTING what you want is KNOWING what you want"? Knowing what you want is obviously very important but it is no guarantee that you will get it. What if you already know exactly what you want, but what you really want to know is whether you'll actually get it. There is a way to know for certain if you are on track or not and it's very easy to assess.

Getting what you want is a three step process:-
1. Decide what you want.
2. Find out what you need to do to in order to get it.
3. Do what it takes.

That may sound simple but that's exactly how it works. All the other skills and strategies to help you become successful, while very useful, are in fact strategies to help you be able to do the three basic steps.

Step 1:
A lot of people talk about being successful but when you ask them what exactly they mean by being successful they can't tell you. They have not taken the time and effort to decide what they want.

Key Factor Number 1:
If you want to be successful but you haven't yet worked out what that really is then your number one priority each and every day should be doing what ever it takes to determine what you want.

By number one priority I mean that you will spend a reasonable amount of highly focused time on that endeavor each and every day, without exception, no matter what other responsibilities and pressures you have.

Step 2:
Some people have decided what they want but they have no idea what they have to do in order to get it. Let's be sensible here. If you don't know what you need to do in order to get what you want then you'd better start putting effort into finding out or success will elude you.

Key Factor Number 2:
If you want to be successful, and you have already decided what being successful really is for you, but you don't know what you have to do to get it, then your number one priority each and every day should be doing what ever it takes to find out what you have to do. Focus on this every day, without exception, no matter what other responsibilities and pressures you have.

Step 3:
No matter how much you want something and how knowledgeable you are on how to get it if you don't actually take the required action then you won't get what you want.

Key Factor Number 3:
If you want to be successful and know what that is for you and you know what you have to do to get it, then your number one priority each and every day should be doing it. Focus on this every day, without exception, no matter what other responsibilities and pressures you have.

So back to our original question. How do know if you are actually going to get what you want? Here is the test.

Work out which of the three steps you are up to. Then that will tell you which of the three Key Factors you should be focusing on.

If you are spending quality, focused time, each and every day, on the appropriate Key Factor, no matter what, then you are on track to getting what you want.

If you are not spending quality, focused time, each and every day, on putting that Key Factor into action, no matter what, then you are just kidding yourself.

Make a brutally honest assessment of your daily activities and if you're not on track then change your priorities or learn to accept mediocrity or less.
